1) Simple and Inexpensive Online Course Delivery Using Network EducationWare.

Professor J. Mark Pullen (George Mason University)

Network EducationWare (NEW) is an open source software package for synchronous delivery of classroom instruction over the Internet. NEW was developed at George Mason University in Virginia, based on open-source Internet multimedia tools from multiple sources. It runs on low-cost Windows and Linux systems, supports synchronous delivery of audio and high-quality graphics with optional video, records classes for later playback from a server, works over a 56K dialup modem link, and is free for academic use. This tutorial will explain how to install and operate a NEW system for effective course delivery. Participants with laptop computers will install and use NEW during the session. Installation of the single-course NEW server will be demonstrated and the capabilities of the more elaborate Web-based multi-course server will be presented (using NEW, of course). Participants will depart with a working instance of NEW and an understanding how to use it to deliver educational content. For details on NEW see http://netlab.gmu.edu/NEW.

2) Authoring and Design of Online Role-Play Simulations

Ron Linser (Fablusi P/L)

From teacher education to politico-strategic thinking, from second language learning to literature, nursing, marketing, and even high school civics, role-play simulations are increasingly being used as a way for students to experience issues, problems and dilemmas and hence learn in a dynamic interactive environment. This workshop aims to provide participants with general principles for creating such role-play simulations and to provide a tailored framework to the particular fields of participants.

3) Technologies, Methodologies and Directions for Engineering Education

A/Prof Tim Hesketh (UNSW), A/Prof Eliathamby Ambiakairajah (UNSW), Dr Julien Epps (NICTA) and Dr Ming Sheng (UNSW)
